Blu-ray Avatar

I was in JB Hi-Fi at lunch, and they had Avatar playing from Blu-ray on a high-def screen. The amount of detail was staggering - I literally stopped in my tracks. It was almost too much in fact - it made me focus on the Navi and try and pick holes in the animation, rather than watching the movie itself. I’d love to see it side by side with a DVD version.

Is too real a problem with Blu-ray/HD, or is it just a matter of adjusting your eyes/brain/expectations?

The changing typography of the Web

Fontfest on the way:

While most designers are excited about the opportunities all these new font options will afford, not all of them are convinced that it will lead to beautiful Web design. “It’s great, but it’s also horrible,” Lai said. “Now if people want some random handwriting site, they can have one. It’s going to go through growing pains, there’s no question about that.”

‘Corporate quality product’

Introduction of such poorly manufactured products into [workplace] will only serve to create a lot more work for the support departments and therefore increase general user downtime.

Apple is NOT a corporate quality product!

email rant (accidentally?) sent to a LOT of staff at my work in reply to an invitation to an iPad demo. Wonder if they’d have been as vehement if it was a demo of a ‘high quality' Dell notebook, or a Google Nexus.

The Curious Significance of triple j

Meanjin:

According to Stephen Green, ‘It’s important that triple j doesn’t stray too far left [of centre] because it’s the vehicle for people’s musical exploration.’ Green explains it as a demographic shift whereby listeners' tastes develop as they age.

You might start at Video Hits_ at age ten; by the time you get to your mid teens you’ve progressed onto Nova, they’re playing more progressive stuff and it starts to open your mind a little. Once that’s not enough for you, you jump to triple j: they’re playing a couple of songs you’ve heard on Nova, but they’re playing a lot of stuff you haven’t. Triple j helps you get on that journey where you are listening to new stuff, that’s the entry point to get you to listen to 4ZZZ and FBi. If you take triple j too left of centre, you are taking that link out of the chain of musical growth for people.

Dwyane, LeBron and other humans

Sports Guy:

I split my [Clippers] season tickets with my friend Tollin this year. We went to 21 games combined, gave away 15, and ate five games either because we couldn’t find anyone or forgot there was a game. Of the 10 I attended, I enjoyed two. Not only does the Sports Gal refuse to go with me anymore, she refuses to allow me to bring my kids, explaining, “If you want them to like sports, this isn’t going to help.” Good point.
